( கீழே தமிழிலும்) I was in a friend’s place for his son’s birthday party, a few weeks ago. It happened that I have invited myself into a conversation, as the conversation was about how important to know Hindi is! I am trying to be polite about the conversation, I must say that they were discussing how it would be to have a single language policy! We are the people of hundreds of languages and dialects, and the “unity in diversity” is a great politicized slogan of all the time, whether you mean/understand it!
The conversation was between me and a duo, a Tamil-Pondicherry friend, who was from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), mentioned how bad was his experience at the institute, as he could not communicate (?!) well with the Northern Indian people. Another Telugu-friend, who was also proposing or having an inclination towards having a lingua-franca-type approach. My stance was not against learning a new language, in fact, I wish to be a polyglot, but bullying their own language and the culture, is not acceptable.
I was also from similar environments at IIT Madras and MatScience-like institutes and my experiences were not similar, although. At IISc, our group had majority of Bengalis. I never had any problems mingling with such groups. May be, I am not talkative, still I could learn about their hobbies, arts and philosophy.
Anyway, coming back to the conversation, it’s a normal scene with the typical conversation-backdrops, as people tend to have their own opinions and generalize the cases and propose these kinds of concepts. And I wanted to explain them what the present-day language-equality enthusiasts are into and their efforts in making the languages survive in this web-influenced society. More than that, the politicized version of sanskritization and Hindi imposition attract the general ‘juntas’ with the flaunting concepts based on one-language and one-world-type (It’s the motto of Ham Radio operators, however that’s different!).
So, I kept trying to continue my conversation, but the conversation was not well-taken, may be my “aggressive-villager” (no political pun intended! 😀 ) approach and I could feel that I was like obnoxiously pro-Tamil, in their view. Therefore, my opinions could not reach them so good! So, thought of sharing ‘my’ experiences, which is not based on an individualistic perspective, but I just wanted to show what is happening in our society.
First assumption, which the friends “might have had” during the conversation was, Tamils are the lingo-fanatics. Most of the northern Indian people speak Hindi; the worst part is, I could not even convey that not all the northies are Hindi-speaking. Hindi opposition has been almost a century old problem (late 1930s); similarly, imposing Urdu over East Pakistan was the reason for the birth of independent Bangladesh. These are all old stories.
There are many language enthusiasts like Mani Manivannan (Info-techie), Aazhi Senthil Nathan (activist), Garga Chatterjee (Prof from ISI Kolkata), Joga Virk, Dhairya Kant Mishra, et al, were the key people for the recent Chennai conference for language equality held in last September 2015.
Even the prominent languages are suffering a lot in this IT era, then how about the language isolates and other fading northern-Dravidian languages? There is always a mental dichotomy in dealing with these stuffs. Anyway, you must know that there are plenty of foreign researchers who work on Tamil and there are constant inflow of Tamil-learning pupils in Polish, German, French universities and around the world.
Again, hundreds of times I have put the same thing in every conversation, but I feel no shame in sharing it again! When I met with Prof. Ulrich Nikolas, Dr. Thomas Malten of Indology and Tamil dept of Koeln University, they have really tough time raising the funds for research. They have been requesting the German, Tamil Nadu and Indian governments for the research grants to do research in Tamil. Once, Dr. Thomas Malten was criticizing for my interest on ethnolinguistic research, as he was defending present-day need for Tamilology, he told me that how much works they have for centuries old Deutsch/German and its dialects, and
he asked me that “Tamil, aayira varushangal pazhamaiyaana oru mozhi! Aanaa adhukku eththanai akaraadhi irukku?? “(“Tamil is a language of thousands of years old! But how many good lexicons you have?”), comparing the present-day Tamil scenario with other European languages.
Most importantly, the Tamil departments in the universities, around the world suffer a lot due to the funding and the diminishing enthusiasm (even its own people do not respect it!). Worsening the situation further, Central government is not taking right actions for the Tamil departments in the Indian universities as well. Whether you respect or disrespect or have discretion for your own language is the problem of an individual, but not supporting what others in need is definitely, a cruelty.
Even the EU has the toughest time and people start to think about the language equality and promoting the equality. You may know that the EU languages (though De(utsch)nglish, Du(tch)nglish, Franglais, etc, are actually, not that much corrupted as we do to Tamil in Tamil Nadu.
At the same time, Scandinavian countries have been discussing on the mother-tongue based education as one of the fundamental rights, not only they were discussing, but also they have already implemented, encouraging and making proper arrangements in their schools for the students to learn/in their native tongue. Tamil is also supported in their mother-tongue based education.

But in Tamil Nadu, people do not even think about their own traditions and language. It is viewed as an emotional thing to speak about the mother tongue. You lose your language, you lose your identity. As far as I have seen, people are not even in their first step of maturity to lose their identity. It is that they speak out of charlatanry and nonsensical perceptions. Any common man tend to take up a position, which is absolutely idiotic and ruthless.
One can be ignorant about what is happening around, but uttering on something, which you do not even know about, would definitely spoil the paths of the society. Imposing something means you must be ready to be repulsed!
I used to playfully ask Dr. Thomas Malten of Indology and Tamil Dept of Koeln Univ.
“Neenga Tamizhara, Deutscheraa” (“Are you a Tamil or Deutscher/German?”),
and he used to reply
“Naan Tamil thaan, Thanjaavurkkaaran” (“I am a Tamil and a ‘native’ of Tanjavur/Tanjore”)
Seriously! I think we have to take such people to Tamil Nadu! 😉
